January: Time to get political!

A new year, a new look, and a new introduction to the month – January is a time for change, and we have lots going on this month!

Our theme for January is politics, but what does politics mean to you? Are you concerned about Brexit and how it might impact LGBTQ+ rights? Do we have to make room in the LGBTQ+ community for those on the right, who often claim to be oppressed by their political views? We hope to explore these issues and more, and as usual, guest posts on any aspect of politics are welcomed; please drop us a line at lee@thequeerness.com.

January 27th is Holocaust Memorial Day, and the persecution of LGBTQ+ people under the Nazis is finally being acknowleged by organisations, governments and charities. Many events to mark the 27th will include LGBTQ+ people, and in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the first UK memorial to those lost is underway. We will be catching up with those planning the memorial, and why they think it is needed.

This month, we will also be talking to the founders of an LGBTQ+ Muslim campaigning and support organisation, Hidayha, asking whether we really need a Will and Grace reboot, considering what identity politics really is, and looking at Boris Johnsons homophobia as well as our usual news, essays, reviews and views.
